Outdoor furniture wholesale:
what fails in year one, and what survives year three

A woven outdoor set that looks premium at delivery can be three different products by its third summer — and the failure points arrive on schedule. The rattan chalks first, the cushions fade next, and the frame rusts through last. This guide walks the timeline: what breaks, which specification prevents it, and which test reports to collect so your PO is enforceable. Written from our sourcing office in Guangzhou, next door to the Foshan outdoor furniture workshops.

Year one: the rattan chalks and the cushions fade

Two components carry most first-year warranty complaints.

Rattan. Export outdoor furniture weaves almost exclusively synthetic rattan — PE in the mid and upper market, PVC in the budget tier. What separates them at the compound level is the UV package: strand extruded without enough UV stabilizer chalks, sheds powder and starts snapping within one to two seasons. Require UV-added rattan in writing, and get the material grade name on record. Flat and round profiles run from roughly 1 mm to 3 mm depending on the weave style — what matters more than the number on the spec sheet is the bend test: fold a strand end hard at inspection; quality PE flexes back, low-grade snaps white at the crease.

Color behavior depends on how the strand is colored. Through-color (full-body) strand keeps tone for years; surface-coated strand — common in two-tone weaves — fades unevenly, and the price gap is cents per meter, not dollars. Specify through-color for any set selling into sun markets.

Cushions. Standard polyester covers survive months, not seasons. For wholesale orders the two specifications that matter: solution-dyed olefin or outdoor-acrylic covers, which hold color for years, and quick-dry foam or polyester-fiber filling — never indoor foam, which holds water and mildews from the inside. Ask for the cover fabric's lightfastness rating (AATCC 16 is the reference test) and put the grade in the PI.

Years two and three: frames and welds give out

After the fabric goes, the frame decides whether the set is furniture or scrap.

Frame quality lives in the details that never photograph well: welds ground smooth before coating, fastener holes drilled before powder coating so the hole wall is sealed, and hardware that matches the frame finish. Mismatched zinc bolts on an aluminum frame are the first rust spots your customers will photograph and send back.

For enforcement, reference the standards in your PO: salt-spray resistance to ASTM B117 for coated frames, and UV aging to ISO 4892 for the rattan compound. Suppliers who actually run these tests can produce reports; suppliers who cannot will quietly stop quoting.

Glass tops: the year-three surprise

Tempered glass tabletops carry a rare but expensive failure mode — thermal self-breakage in full sun. Require tempering certification (EN 12150 or ANSI Z97.1) with the shipment documents, and for very hot markets ask whether the supplier offers heat-soak testing. It is a small line item that prevents the worst claim scenario.

Outdoor sets ship by volume, not weight

Woven sets are light cargo at high volume, so freight is quoted on measurement. Plan roughly 2–4 CBM per woven dining or lounge set and work backward: one 40HQ (about 68 CBM usable) builds either a full outdoor story — sofa group + dining set + loungers from one weave family — or a deeper program on fewer designs. Table frames and legs knock down flat; hand-woven bodies do not, so cap stacking height in the packing instructions. Rattan scuffs and glass needs separate crating: fix the packing method in the PI, before the weaving starts.

What to check at pre-shipment inspection

Skipping the generic checklist — here is what is specific to outdoor:

Working with us

The ALBAHAUS outdoor catalog lists 196 outdoor models with factory-direct wholesale pricing — PE-rattan dining sets, lounge groups, sun loungers and swings. Sample orders start from 5 pieces per model, mixed models per container are standard, bulk production runs 25–40 days after sample approval (book earlier for the September–December restocking season and around Chinese New Year), and every shipment gets pre-shipment inspection before loading. Planning an outdoor program? Send us the destination market and price band and we will come back with shortlisted factories and quotes.
